TYPOGRAPHY SUMMER SCHOOL

I've just been offered a place at the Typography Summer School in July, a really exciting opportunity to learn all things typographic from the design heavyweights, including the legendary Ken Garland.

'Typography Summer School is a meeting place for graduates of graphic design, wanting to bridge the gap between education and professional practice and learn more about typography. The school will bring together leading practitioners and participants to study, exchange ideas, and investigate the discipline.

As well as running a range of projects within typography with real clients and budgets, the school will also act as a think tank encouraging research and dialogue. It is intended that this environment will provide a forum in which to discuss what typography is, its relevance in design history and the role it plays in today's society. The school will investigate the role of typographic design across ranging mediums, from books to film credits and posters to websites.

The school is founded by Fraser Muggeridge and is independent from any college or educational organisation. This structure combined with the limited capacity of participants will create a unique, vibrant and immersive learning experience.'

DYSTOPIA EXHIBITION UPDATE

Frustrated by the increasingly testosterone fuelled atmosphere dominating the South London art scene, the ever pro-active Reena Makwana (founder of Nest Gallery/Group) has retaliated with a 'lady's only' policy for the upcoming Dystopia exhibition. Launching at the Sassoon Gallery, Peckham with a private view on the 9th September, Dystopia will showcase works from female illustrators, writers, printmakers and fine artists.

In keeping with the show's ethos, curation will be undertaken in collaboration with Laura Vent of 'The Sisters Burn' and Wieden and Kennedy.

ROOTED PUBLICATION RELEASED

The Rooted Catalogue for the 2009 exhibition has been printed and is ready for sale. A lovely perfect bound book it's a steal at only £9.95 and catalogues work from the 2nd exhibition held at the Truman Brewery in September. You can get your hands on one here.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the Rooted project they have this to say about themselves:

'Rooted is a FREE experimental exhibition that helps to showcase the talent of graduates from an array of disciplines by giving you free reign within a space to display your work to top industry figures and the public.

There are no rules or boundaries; you can put up, hang, project (or even wear) your work wherever you want for it to be seen and stand out from the rest. This means that the presentation needs to be just as creative as the work itself.'

Since the exhibition Rooted has also been featured in Michael Johnson's blog, Thought for the Week.

Lovely.

ONEDOTZERO_ADVENTURES IN MOTION @ BFI SOUTHBANK
9-13 SEPT

The finale of CASCADE_09 was a presentation of ideas, concepts and final solutions to the brief 'Re-Imagining the City' received back in August. Held at the BFI Southbank as part of Onedotzero's
Adventures in Motion festival.

'Onedotzero_adventures in motion returns to london to begin a new residency at the BFI SOUTHBANK, presenting a diverse and radiant showcase of commissions, visionary new work and talent. Onedotzero's energetic programming delivers a compelling mix of arts, culture and entertainment, bringing together groundbreaking cinematic work, sensory installations, explosive live audiovisual and music performances, stellar screening programmes, in-depth discussions, presentations and social events.

The festival showcases a tantalising mix of the brightest up-and-coming talents alongside world-leading creative luminaries; an international array of creators who stretch ideas of motion
entertainment, where code clashes with hand crafted, street art tussles with technology and new modes of storytelling are unleashed from the small screen to the BFI IMAX. All underpinned by a theme of citystates, a creative inquiry into the idea of how we live in the modern metropolis.'

The link below features a video showing the events of the onedotzero festival launch party 2009, held at the same site as '1095 Days of Design' back in June. ONEDOTZERO_CASCADE_09

'As one of this years outstanding creative graduates we would like you to be involved in a unique event that onedotzero are organizing in partnership with Glue London and the BFI Southbank from 9-14 august of this year. Onedotzero_cascade 09 will start at the Doodle bar in Battersea with a series of workshops and activities led by Glue London allowing the cream of 2009's college leavers to work with some of onedotzero's most innovative partners. It will provide you with the opportunity to collaborate with other disciplines in order to explore the potential of interdisciplinary teamwork.

At the beginning of September, Cascade will move on to the BFI Southbank where you will showcase your work at this year's festival which will present a dynamic compilation of leading edge cinematic expressions in the form of short films, promos, interactive experiences and feature films. Educational forums, panel discussions, workshops, parties and lounge events allow for new creative connections, with artists, industry members and the public, experiencing inspiration and first hand creative insights.'
